When a poor Welsh fisherman called Huw falls in love with a selkie - half-woman, half-seal - she bears him two children, Ffion and Morlo, before returning to her own people. Years later, a stranger visiting the village tells of a New World where people can own their land and profit from their labour. But for the listening villagers the prospect of emigrating is no more than a distant dream, until Ffion and Morlo recall their mother singing of cities beneath the waves - shining cities of gold and pearls.... We loved this story, with Jackie Morris’s amazing illustrations of the magical landscape around St David’s, where The Seal Children is set. Very atmospheric and full of longing for the sea, this story should appeal to children aged around 5-8.
