Nahmad, Claire: AN ARMY OF LIGHT (September 2005)

Dear Friends,

I would like to use this letter to offer a few words which I hope will encourage you in these challenging times.

Whilst such difficult conditions as those we are currently experiencing prevail in the outer world, it seems that many people, even some who have set their feet upon a spiritual path, are beginning to feel that worldly measures alone are those on which we should rely to triumph over the gathering darkness. They tell us that a preoccupation with inner realities has clearly failed to save the world and that such a stance is a luxury which ought only to be indulged in during periods when peace and well-being are much more prevalent in the world than they are today.

How truly dangerous this thinking is! It may be timely to remind ourselves that many spiritual teachers and exalted masters predicted that what we see happening around us now would indeed come to pass, its occurrence tempting us to see division and hatred everywhere, to perceive a deepening schism between east and west, to believe that things are getting worse and that we must have recourse to arms and aggression and all the old attitudes in order to preserve civilization itself.

We need to focus steadily on the fact that something is indeed in its death-throes – a blinkered and outmoded realm of visionless consciousness that is screaming blue murder rather than stepping forward into transformative enlightenment (it can bear anything but that horrid fate!) – which would dearly love to drag us all down with it in its thrashing and indignant coils, as it heads inexorably into the unmanifest. We must continue to beware of the poisonous breath of its philosophy and scorching illusions as we witness its valedictory shrieks.

To offset these, we can bear in mind that the master White Eagle has assured us that humankind, far from slipping back into spiritual unconsciousness, is coming on in leaps and bounds, and that no act of foolishness from those of its members who choose to hold on to ignorance will be allowed to deprive us of a glorious future for all the earth – a future which is much nearer than we can imagine, lying as it does just a little beyond the obscuring veil of materiality which aeons of human spiritual blindness have woven between itself and reality.

But this does not mean that the work will be done for us and that we can afford to drift into inaction. On the contrary, this work is our sacred and allotted task. Upon those of us who can see above and beyond the pall of conflict and confusion that is created by outer conditions depends the future of humanity.

I am currently putting the finishing touches to a book about Mary Magdalene which I brought through with Margaret Bailey, my co-author. During the process of writing it the revelation was made to us that the stars and humanity are one, and that the consciousness of humanity is indeed an emanation of the mystical starlight.

All of us who have heard the call of the spirit, who are following our own beauty path to the stars, who wish to respond to the desperate need of humankind at this crucial time of transition from one age to the next, can do something stupendous and limitlessly powerful every day to help humanity and our beautiful earth. At certain significant hours, we can send forth this mystical starlight so that its healing, transforming and enlightening power encompasses the entire earth and her peoples, be they human, animal, vegetable or spirit.

Choose one of the 'magical' hours of 3, 6, 9 or 12, especially 12 noon (the sacred rhythm bypasses the complications of time zones). Use the cusp of the hour. Breathe gently and rhythmically, and begin to see a pure white or golden flame burning steadfastly in the Grail cup of your heart. Let it radiate outwards with your breath and become a great shining star in the heavens. See all the earth, all her beings, irradiated with this enfolding, sustaining, transfiguring light.

This is true self-giving. If you can perform the Star ceremony, even for only a minute or two, each day (as far as possible) at noon or another of the magical hours, your spiritual work will be as important for our future as the work of the great archangels who work ceaselessly for the good of humanity.

The materialist will tell you that such service is ineffectual, but the so-called wisdom of the materialist or the 'realist' has led us for millennia ever deeper into darkness and distress.

The true wisdom tells us that a single light-worker giving forth the mystical starlight (the consciousness of the heart) can overcome the chaotic downward pull of ten thousand negative thinkers; and as we become stronger in the light, the positive effect increases even further. There is indeed no limitation to the power of the Star.

Always work from the heart. This is the safe, designated chakra for the emanation of the sacred starlight. It balances and nourishes all the other chakras.

Working with Mary Magdalene, we were intrigued to note that an anagram of her name is 'army', and that the military salute derives from a gesture of devotion made by knights to the representation of the Goddess when they rode off in her sacred name to perform deeds that would restore justice, mercy and peace to the community. Its meaning was "I am unworthy to look upon the radiance of your spiritual beauty."

It helped us to understand that the real meaning of the concept of an 'army' has nothing to do with military might or aggression.

It is an entity composed of light-workers gently, steadfastly, unassailably giving out the light of the mystical Star, the essence of our spiritual being, sure in the knowledge that the 'enemy' is not another ideology or community or indeed any being at all, but just simply the confusion that arises when we are cut off from our source, the light of our spirit.

All those of us living in Britain at the present time have a special duty to the light. Britain is the 'mystic isle', the Grail cup of the world. Until we can release her light and fill her sacred cup with our own, the global community will be deprived of the strength it needs to establish heaven on earth. I would like to leave you with this thought: every individual effort is sorely needed and is indispensable. When I was going through a bleak patch where I began to doubt if my little effort could really matter in the greater scheme of things, a book from a shelf hurled itself at my feet, its open leaves revealing the following poem (note the last line of the second verse!):

Say not the struggle nought availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been, things remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke concealed,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back through creeks and inlets making
Came, silent, flooding in, the main,

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light,
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly,
But westward, look, the land is bright!

Arthur Hugh Clough

With love and light

Claire
