Review Throughout the time she spent writing Earth Magic, Claire Nahmad felt very strongly the presence and guidance of an ancient fairy woman, and the teachings of this wise being are what she presents in this book. Adding to these teachings the wisdom handed down to her by her ancestors, as well as a wealth of ancient folklore, Claire gives a unique quality of purity to this round-the-year guide to the wisewoman's healing craft. Earth Magic shows you how to cultivate, gather and store herbs, how to prepare and use special charms and remedies and how to interpret weatherlore. Also explained is how the movement of the stars and planets influences human, animal and plant life, which are the best seasons, months and times for carrying out specific projects and much more. This book draws you into a wonderful spiritual atmosphere in which you can truly connect with nature. 254pp, 136mm x 216mm, softback, 2001

Extract Earth Magic: A Wisewoman’s Guide to Herbal, Astrological and other Folk Remedies. There is a strange and beautiful night-time phenomenon, only occasionally to be seen in the northern hemisphere, called the Zodiacal Light. In springtime, it is just a glow in the western skies after the sun has set and gone. In the autumn, it can be seen in the east before sunrise, like a radiant mist with a pearly lustre set at its heart. But in the tropics its conical shape expands into a ring of light like a crown, some parts of it as brilliant as the stars. For those who believe that life has meaning, and that no phenomenon is senseless or random, this haunting light may seem to be a celebration of the zodiac itself, its stars and planets, the Sun and Moon which majestically tread its course, and the unending and unfathomable significance it has for our beloved Earth, the exquisite centre-jewel of the universe as we experience it.
Earth Magic is written from this perspective. My material is drawn from the ancient wisewoman’s tradition, a tradition which reaches back many centuries to a time when the influence of the stars and planets on all animate and inanimate things of the Earth was acknowledged and accepted, and when practitioners of healing and herbalism, whose vision was holistic, took these influences into account and were expert in their understanding of them. This lore has been passed down in the oral tradition of womenfolk for generation after generation. Much of it has been relayed faithfully from century to century by simple country people, as well as being recorded in detail by great men of science such as Copernicus, Galileo and St Thomas Aquinas. Both sources contribute to our western mystery tradition.
This verbal lore of the wisewoman teaches us how to love and revere the Earth; how to respond to her magic and return in some measure the blessing and healing which we receive from her. It is a tradition which acknowledges sexual equality, values the significance of the inner life and respects the liberty of the individual. At its heart, is a mystical vision of the universe in which the Earth is seen as spirit, and her brothers and sisters in the solar system as the physical counterparts of great spiritual beings. Our evolution as human beings is believed to affect the evolution of the Earth Spirit which, in turn, affects the evolution of even mightier beings; the same principle assures us that the animal and plant kingdoms need our assistance in advancing their own evolution, and even that we are connected through this integrated chain to the mineral kingdom in which the herbs and trees and grasses have their roots. Many will instinctively feel the truth of this, having loved the scents of the wholesome brown soil and felt the life and mystery, even the beating heart, in stones and rocks and precious jewels.
Through the wisewoman’s tradition, we can appreciate the ever-changing influence of the stars on our lives and on all the plants and creatures with whom we are privileged to share our world. We may learn from the women of old the mystery in the folkname of a flower, the strange and lovely myths associated with trees, the fabulous tales told of totem beasts which are symbols of our inner selves, the magical attributes of birds, the phantoms of the old gods seen in clouds and weather-phenomena, the spirits perceived in wells and running water, in fairy hills and halls. Our heritage is rich indeed, and the treasury of spells, charms, tales, beliefs, herbal lore and Underworld wisdom spun through the years and handed down from the age to age enshrines and shelters the golden and silver threads of pattern and meaning that enrich all of our lives.
The ‘wisewoman’ of the text is not me, but I was fortunate to inherit, as a child, the traditional wisdom of the craft from my maternal grandmother. The wisewoman’s voice may be regarded as the voice of an ancient wisdom whose wellsprings are fed by Britain’s Druidic past. While they boast no high esoteric knowledge (although such knowledge was surely an attainment of ancient cultures) the wisewoman’s teachings are permeated with a gentle vision which may help us to realise once again that the Earth is indeed magical.
